Herr, wenn ich nur dich habe
“Herr, wenn ich nur dich habe” — “Lord, if I have only You” — is a German Baroque sacred concerto on words from Psalm 73: “Lord, if I have only You, I ask nothing of heaven and earth.” It is a meditation on faith as the one possession that outlasts every loss.
The setting heard here is by David Pohle (1624–1695), a German composer and Kapellmeister of the generation between Schütz and Bach, whose sacred works distill the intimate, text-driven expression of the mid-17th-century North German style.
Reginald Mobley & Agave Baroque
On Peace in Our Time (2018), countertenor Reginald Mobley opens the program with Pohle’s concerto, accompanied by the period-instrument ensemble Agave Baroque. Mobley’s clear, unforced voice carries the prayer’s stillness against the warm sonorities of viols and continuo.
The album
“Herr, wenn ich nur dich habe” opens a program of German Baroque music on loss, consolation, and resilience — works by Matthias Weckmann, Johann Christoph Bach, Samuel Scheidt, Johann Rosenmüller, and Franz Tunder. Together they trace a quiet path from grief toward peace.
