Theresa Calpotura

1 album on VGo Recordings

Classical guitarist Theresa Calpotura has performed extensively throughout the United States and the Philippines, with appearances on national and international television and radio. She studied at the Oberlin Conservatory with Stephen Aron, at the Yale School of Music with Benjamin Verdery, and at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music with Scott Cmiel. Her training extends beyond classical guitar to lute studies with Christopher Morrongiello and jazz guitar with Tony Romano, with master classes under John Williams, Sharon Isbin, and David Tanenbaum.

In 2010, Calpotura received the MuKha Arts and Science Prize from Nobel Laureate Torsten Weisel, recognizing her work bridging Filipino musical heritage and the classical guitar tradition. She has also received Yale University's AlumniVentures grant and awards from the National Foundation for the Advancement of the Arts. She currently teaches at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music Preparatory Division and serves on the advisory board of the Omni Foundation, which hosts one of the nation's longest-running guitar concert series.

Her debut album Kanta Filipina on VGo Recordings features original, arranged, and transcribed Filipino compositions for solo guitar, created in collaboration with Filipino composer Bayani Mendoza de Leon — a project that celebrates the rich and underrepresented guitar music of the Philippines.
