Cristina Pérez Madiedo is a classical guitarist of Cuban-Colombian heritage, recognized for her remarkably warm tone, enchanting tremolo, and flawless execution. She was the winner of the second Boston GuitarFest International Guitar Competition in 2007, an annual festival and competition presented by the Eliot Fisk Guitar Academy at the New England Conservatory. Her deeply sensitive interpretations and outstanding technique brought her to the attention of world-renowned maestro Eliot Fisk, who selected her to be featured in the second volume of his acclaimed Guitar Series on VGo Recordings.
Released in 2008, Eliot Fisk Guitar Series Vol. 2 presents a compelling survey of Latin American guitar music spanning more than a century of composition. The program opens with Antonio Lauro's spirited Seis Por Derecho and includes three works by the legendary Paraguayan guitarist-composer Agustín Barrios Mangoré, among them the beloved Julia Florida and the virtuosic Un Sueño en la Floresta. Contemporary Cuban music is represented by three compositions from Eduardo Martín and Canción de Laura by Carlos Fariñas. The album culminates with Leo Brouwer's monumental three-movement Sonata, one of the most important works in the modern guitar repertoire.
Throughout the recording, Pérez Madiedo demonstrates an extraordinary command of the instrument and an intuitive affinity for the rich musical traditions of Latin America and the Caribbean. As Eliot Fisk noted in his liner notes, she embodies everything one looks for in a professional classical guitarist—technical brilliance in service of deeply felt musical expression.
